Planning a trip to Hallstatt

Hallstatt is not one trip but several, sold by different operators: coach and minibus day tours from Salzburg and Vienna, private drivers, the train with a ferry across the lake, the Salzwelten salt mine with its new funicular and Skywalk, and the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car in Obertraun, with the Giant Ice Cave and the 5fingers platform.

Which one is right depends on where you start, how long you have in the village, and whether the salt mine or the mountains matter more to you. These pages compare them plainly.

Quick answers

All questions →
Is the ferry included in my train ticket?

No. You pay for the ferry separately at the quayside: €4 one way or €8 return between Hallstatt Markt and the station, cash only. A ferry is ready for every train arrival and departure; our guide to getting there compares every route.

Can I drive into Hallstatt?

No. The centre is closed to traffic during the day, even for hotel guests. Day visitors park at P1 (all year) or P2 (summer), which cannot be reserved, and walk 5 to 20 minutes into the village.

How do I get to Hallstatt from Salzburg without a car?

By bus, take line 150 to Bad Ischl, then bus 541 and bus 543 with a change at Gosaumühle to Hallstatt Lahn. By train, change at Attnang-Puchheim for Hallstatt station, a journey of either 2 hours 16 minutes or 2 hours 41 minutes, then take the ferry.

Is the Hallstatt salt mine open?

Yes. The new Salzbergbahn funicular and the modernised salt mine reopened on 29 August 2026. The combo ticket costs €49 for adults, and the funicular with the Skywalk alone costs €29; check current prices and hours before you go.
