Hallstatt in Winter: What's Open, Christmas Markets and Snow
Hallstatt in winter is quieter, darker and colder than in summer, and still very much open. The ferry from the station runs to meet the trains right through the winter, the salt mine and its funicular are open until 6 January 2027, the World Heritage Museum keeps daily hours, and on 8 December the market square fills for the village’s Christmas market. What you lose is the high mountain: the Dachstein caves close after their summer season, and the Krippenstein cable car stops until the ski season begins on 19 December.
So is it worth going? Yes, if you plan around what is open. This article covers what winter is like, what runs month by month in the 2026/2027 season, the Christmas market and Advent events around the lakes, the old winter customs, skiing and snow walks nearby, and the practical points that matter more in winter than in summer.
The short answer
- Open all winter: the station ferry, the World Heritage Museum and the Bone House, with shorter winter hours.
- Open until 6 January 2027: the salt mine and its funicular, with shorter hours from 2 November.
- Closed: the Dachstein caves, whose 2026 season ended on 1 November.
- Ski season: Dachstein Krippenstein, daily from 19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027.
- Christmas market: Tuesday 8 December 2026, 10:00 to 18:00, on the market square.
- Last bus: 18:16 from Bad Ischl towards Hallstatt.
What winter is like in Hallstatt
Hallstatt’s centre lies at 511 m, on a narrow strip of shore between steep mountainsides and the lake. In winter that setting means short days and cold air over the water. Plan your outdoor time for the middle of the day and keep the indoor sights for the late afternoon.
Snow in the village comes and goes from week to week and from year to year, so do not build a trip around one particular snowy photograph. The reliable snow is higher up: the Dachstein Krippenstein ski area above Obertraun runs from 19 December, and even there the operator says skiing depends on suitable snow conditions.
The lake stays cold rather than frozen. The regional tourist board gives the water temperature as low as 1 degree in winter, against up to 24 degrees in summer. It has frozen over in hard winters in the past: when the salt mine was surveyed completely for the first time, in the sixteenth century, the plans were laid out at full size on a field in Obertraun or, in cold winters, on the frozen lake. Do not plan on walking on it today.
What is open, and when
The table summarises the 2026/2027 season, as published by the operators and the tourist board in October 2026.
| Sight | November 2026 | December 2026 | January to March 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Station ferry | Daily, timed to trains | Daily | Daily |
| Salt mine and funicular | Open, shorter hours from 2 November | Open | Open to 6 January; later dates not yet published |
| World Heritage Museum | 11:00 to 16:00 | 11:00 to 16:00 | 11:00 to 16:00 |
| Bone House | 11:30 to 14:30 | 11:30 to 14:30 | 11:30 to 14:30, as listed from November |
| Krippenstein cable car | Closed | Ski season from 19 December | Open to 29 March |
| Dachstein caves | Closed | Closed | Closed |
Winter hours change at short notice, especially around the holidays, so check each one before you travel. The sections below give the detail and the caveats.
The salt mine and Skywalk in winter
The salt mine reopened on 29 August 2026 with a new funicular, and it stays open into the winter. From 2 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, the operator lists the funicular from 9:00 to 16:30 (the last ride down) and the mine from 9:30, with the last guided tour starting at 15:00. The last ride up is half an hour before the last tour, so a mid-afternoon arrival is already late.
Two caveats. The regional tourist board’s listing shows shorter funicular hours, from 9:00 to 14:30, between 25 October 2026 and 6 January 2027; we have followed the operator, but check its page on the day. And hours after 6 January 2027 had not been published when we wrote this, so if you are travelling later in January or in February, confirm before you plan a day around the mine.
The footpath up to the high valley remains closed for construction, so the funicular is the way up. The mine itself is underground and much the same in any weather, while the Skywalk above the village is the part that needs a clear day. Tickets and the tour are in our salt mine and Skywalk guide.
The Dachstein in winter: skiing, not caves
Across the lake at Obertraun, the Dachstein Krippenstein changes character in winter. Its summer season, with the cable car up to the Krippenstein and the 5fingers platform and the Giant Ice Cave, ran daily from 1 May to 1 November 2026. After that the caves close for the winter, and the cable car pauses until the ski season.
For the 2026/2027 winter, the operator lists Dachstein Krippenstein as open daily from 19 December 2026 until Easter Monday, 29 March 2027, for skiing, snowshoeing and ski touring. Cable cars run every 15 minutes, the first section from 8:30, and skiing depends on suitable snow conditions.
- Before 19 December there is no cable car on the Krippenstein at all, so a winter trip planned around the high viewpoints needs to fall inside the ski season.
- For families, Austria’s tourist board recommends the Dachstein West ski area at Gosau.
- For the summer side of the mountain, the caves and the platforms, see our guide to Hallstatt and the Dachstein.
On the lake: the ferry that keeps running
Hallstatt’s railway station is on the far shore of the lake, and the ferry Stefanie crosses to the village to meet the trains all year round. The route has run since 1881, and the regional tourist board says it is the only boat service on an Austrian lake that keeps operating through the winter months.
- Fare: €4 one way between Hallstatt Markt and the station, €8 return.
- Payment: cash only; the boats take no cards.
- Weather: crossings can be cancelled in bad weather.
- Sightseeing: the round trips via Obertraun, of about 50 minutes, run only until the autumn, so in winter the crossing to the station is your boat trip.
The crossing is short, but it is worth taking even if you arrived by bus: the regional tourist board points out that only from the lake do you get this view of the village with the mountains around it.
Christmas in Hallstatt: the market on 8 December
The village’s Advent highlight is a single day. Hallstatt’s Christmas market is on Tuesday 8 December 2026, from 10:00 to 18:00, on the market square, with free entry. The organisers list music, crafts and handicrafts, traditional food, biscuits, mulled wine and punch. A three-dimensional nativity scene designed by the HTBLA Hallstatt, the local technical college, stands beside a large illuminated Christmas tree.
Two things to know before you plan around it:
- It is one day, not a season. If you want several evenings of Advent stalls, base yourself where the longer markets run, listed below, and come to Hallstatt for the day of the market.
- Markets across the region open that day too. Several of the Salzkammergut’s Advent markets list special hours for Tuesday 8 December, so expect the roads and buses to be busier than on a normal winter weekday.
Advent around the lakes
Hallstatt is surrounded by longer-running Advent markets, most within the distances covered in our guide to the Salzkammergut lakes and towns near Hallstatt. The regional tourist board’s 2026 listings include:
- Gosau Mountain Christmas: 28 and 29 November and 5 and 6 December 2026, from 13:00 on the Saturdays and 11:00 on the Sundays.
- Bad Ischl: the Schmankerldorf, a village of food stalls in front of the Trinkhalle, from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 (closed 24 to 26 December), with a craftsmen’s market inside the Trinkhalle.
- Wolfgangsee: markets in St Gilgen, Strobl and St Wolfgang from 20 November to 20 December 2026. A boat links the three, and at St Wolfgang the traditional lantern is the main attraction.
- Mondsee: from 20 November to 20 December 2026.
- Gmunden on the Traunsee: from 27 November to 20 December 2026.
- Bad Goisern: Master Advent at the Hand.Werk.Haus on 12 and 13 December 2026, from 10:00 to 18:00.
At St Wolfgang the SchafbergBahn cog railway also runs Advent trips up the Schafberg. If you are in Bad Ischl, the Kaiservilla, the emperor’s summer residence, opened on Advent weekends in its 2025 timetable; check its current hours.
Winter customs: St Nicholas, Krampus and the Glöckler
The Salzkammergut keeps several old winter customs, and a few fall within easy reach of Hallstatt:
- St Nicholas by sleigh. In Obertraun, St Nicholas arrives by sleigh on Sunday 29 November 2026, from 14:30.
- Krampus. The Salzkammergut Krampus Parade is on Monday 7 December 2026 at 17:00. Krampus is the horned companion of St Nicholas in Alpine tradition, so a parade is a noisy, dramatic affair.
- The Glöckler. Every year on 5 January, the eve of Epiphany, Glöckler in white robes with brightly lit caps walk through the Salzkammergut, ringing bells to chase away evil spirits. The custom began in Ebensee on the Traunsee and is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of Austria. Glöckler also run around the Wolfgangsee and in Bad Ischl at nightfall, and a Hallstatt hotel lists the Glöcklerlauf as the first highlight of the year.
- Perchten. The Goisern Perchtenlauf is another of the 14 Salzkammergut traditions on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list.
Christmas to Epiphany: the holiday fortnight
The period from Christmas to early January is the busiest stretch of the winter, and the one where opening dates matter most.
- Ski season. The Krippenstein is running daily from 19 December, so the holidays fall inside the ski season.
- Salt mine. The mine and funicular stay open until 6 January 2027, the last date the operator has published.
- Bad Ischl. The Schmankerldorf in front of the Trinkhalle closes from 24 to 26 December and reopens until 6 January 2027. In its 2025 timetable the Kaiservilla opened daily from 26 to 31 December, so check whether that pattern continues.
- Epiphany eve. The Glöckler run on the evening of 5 January, around the Wolfgangsee, in Bad Ischl and in Ebensee, where the custom began.
Timing matters at both ends. Before 19 December the Christmas markets are on but the Krippenstein has not yet opened; after 6 January the mountain is running but the salt mine’s winter dates are still to be confirmed.
Indoor Hallstatt: the museum and the Bone House
The World Heritage Museum. The tourist board lists the museum as open daily from 11:00 to 16:00 in November and December and from January to March, with original finds from the prehistoric burial ground in the high valley. Adult entry is €12, children €8. Our article on the Hallstatt culture explains what you are looking at and why it matters.
The Bone House. The ossuary in St Michael’s Chapel, with its painted skulls, is listed as open daily from 11:30 to 14:30 from November 2026. The same listing also names Monday and Tuesday as closing days, so check before you climb up to the church. Entry is €2 for adults and €0.50 for children aged 6 to 15, in cash.
Both are short visits under cover, which suits the darkest part of a winter afternoon.
Lake Gosau and walks in the snow
Lake Gosau, about twenty kilometres from Hallstatt, can be visited all year, but the circular trail round it is open only from May to October. The tourist board warns that in winter and spring, avalanches, snow and ice add to the risk of rockfall on the trail, and that there is no snow clearing. You can still see the lake and the Dachstein from the end of the road, and the lake even draws ice divers in winter. Expect it to look different from the summer photographs: the lake is dammed, its level is lowered every autumn, and it is refilled by rain, meltwater and pumping in the spring.
Closer to Hallstatt, keep to cleared lanes and paths. Steps and steep alleys in the village can be icy, and anything higher or off the beaten track calls for proper boots and local advice on conditions. The Dachstein West ski area at Gosau and the Krippenstein are the places to head for if you want snow under your feet.
Getting there and around in winter
The train and the ferry are a dependable way in, since the ferry runs to meet the trains all winter. By bus, Bad Ischl is the hub: the journey on to Hallstatt takes about 40 to 50 minutes, and the last bus towards Hallstatt leaves Bad Ischl station at 18:16. On a dark winter evening that is earlier than many people expect, so build it into your plan.
Driving is possible, with the usual winter caveats for mountain roads. Our guide to getting to Hallstatt covers every route, the parking and the day tours from Salzburg and Vienna. If you are combining several attractions, the SalzkammergutCard is sold for winter as well as summer and gives 25% off many of them.
What to pack and how to plan a winter day
- Shoes with grip. Hallstatt is built on a slope, with steps and lanes that can be icy.
- Warm layers. You will be standing on the ferry, in the market square and out on the Skywalk.
- Cash. The ferry and the Bone House take cash only.
- An early start. With short days and the last mine tour at 15:00, use the morning for the high valley and keep the afternoon for the village.
- A clear-day plan and a grey-day plan. Save the Skywalk and the Krippenstein for sunshine; the mine and the museum work in any weather.
A sample December day: the ferry from the station in the morning, the funicular to the salt mine and the Skywalk, lunch in the village, then the museum and the Bone House in the early afternoon, and the lakefront as the lights come on. On 8 December, swap the afternoon for the Christmas market on the square.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hallstatt worth visiting in winter?
